SETUP
In Amsterdam and many other big cities in The Netherlands are locations were new media and professionals can meet each other. A place like this is missing in Utrecht, and Stichting Medialab Utrecht is founded to make a change in that situation. On the 8th of April a 'pilot' project will start, named SETUP.
For three months SETUP will organize all kinds of events about new/digital media. This will happen in a building of the Dutch Game Garden at De Neude.
This project is not only for the 'new media scene' but we also try to work with this scene. On the website everyone can post their ideas about events and projects, and maybe together we can make in happen!

For this project I'm working together with a group of graphic designers to design the visual identity, a typeface, the setup-magazine and the walk-in magazine.
For the design of the space we used the five key issues of SETUP (Create, Grow, Connect, Expose and Excite) to give an identity to the building of SETUP. I designed together with Nina Westendorp a new pixel-typeface, by using an existing logo of Setup.

Over Dieren

Over Dieren
Pitch for the theatre group Het Nationale Toneel for the play Over Dieren, written by Elfriede Jelinek. Deadline April first.

'A woman alone. She's having an imaginary conversation with a lover: will she give herself to him or not? When she loses herself in him, will she still exist? Is love to disappear in the other and to not exist anymore? The woman hesitates. She cannot decide between surrender and self-preservation.
Then follows a telephone conversation: a men negotiates about a woman. The woman in the magazine are objects, products, animals. The escort service on the other line delivers everything, except love.'

For this poster I photographed a place where prostitutes used to work. Now these houses are empty and forgotten, only the memories remain. The typography is designed in the viewpoint of the photo. By using the lines of the photograph there arises a extra layer between the typography and the photo.

sketches for new project.

Hierbij mijn nieuwe schetsen. Ik laat hier twee stappen zien. In de eerste ontwerpen heb ik mezelf genomen als Digital Native, vs Beatrix, de Digital Immigant. Dat ik mezelf als Digital Native gebruik, betekend niet dat ik achter de uitspraken van het artikel 'Op internet kun je elkaar goed helpen'. Het betekend wel dat ik mezelf als Native erken. In dit ontwerp heb ik portretten van Breatrix gebruikt, en zo dus ook portret/pasfoto's van mijzelf.

Na deze stap ben ik gaan werken met het 'native' aspect. Ik heb mijn pasfoto's vervangen door beelden/foto's waarin ik ben getaged op Facebook. Hierdoor laat ik zien hoe natives zichzelf laten zien aan de rest van de wereld (+ zo word ik gepresenteerd, als andere mij taggen)
Voor de poster van Beatrix werk ik met foto's die door de RVD zijn gepubliceerd: zo presenteert zij zich aan de wereld (zo wordt zij gepresenteerd).









Dit ontwerp is slechts een eerste schets.
1) De begeleidende teksten bij de foto's beter kunnen zijn: location, date, url.
2) Ik ga meer foto's gebruiken; ik wil het niet alleen bij facebook houden als er ook myspace, flicker etc. is.
3) Ik wil experimenten ontwerpen met beelden vanaf bijv. de eerste pagina als je ons googled.
4) Ook wil ik gaan proberen om mijn vorige schetsen/teksten te gaan combineren met de huidige richting.

Varsity 126

Dit jaar heb ik de poster voor de Varsity 126 ontworpen.

In de AH in Utrecht.

Helaas heb ik hem niet kunnen zien nadat hij gedrukt was, aangezien ik in Chongqing ben, maar heb wel wat foto's ontvangen van vrienden die hem in Utrecht hebben zien hangen. De Varsity 126 is op zondag 12 april.

Modern International Art & Design Academy

Entrance of the MIADA academy, where I teach the class Typography to first year Graphic Design students. Besides this I guide seven graduation students with their final projects.

Chongqing

Morgen vertrek ik voor vier maanden naar Chongqing, China.
Ik ben gevraagd om les te geven in typografie aan eerste jaars studenten aan de academie Miada.
Vanaf mei ga ik ook acht laatste jaars studenten begeleiden tijdens hun eindexamen projecten.


Chongqing - plusminus 7 miljoen inwoners, de stad beslaat een oppervlakte zo groot als Gelderland.
