Foxhill, a result of the MA Typeface Design, 2011

Foxhill is a typeface especially designed to work in small sizes such as bilingual religious texts.

The Latin and Greek Foxhill are designed to work harmonious together. It includes polytonic Greek, which is still used in historical texts, literary texts and poetry.
It is available in three weights, for small sizes up to 8pt - regular, bold and italic. The text weights regular, bold and italic are specially designed for texts set in 9 points and above.
The main characteristics of Foxhill are its short ascenders and descenders; this saves space since the leading can be reduced and more lines will fit the page, perfect for usage in religious texts. The large x-height in conjunction with round and open counters ensures legibility and readability in small sizes.

Besides this a funky blackletter inspired-stylistic set is designed for headings and such.
Foxhill comes with several opentype features, as ligatures, swashes, ornaments and titling caps.

Greek ηρεμία

Afgelopen zomer begonnen de eerste opdrachten voor de MA Typeface Design, die we moesten inleveren tijdens de 'welcome week'. Deze bestonden uit het lezen van boeken (we kregen een never-ending boekenlijst), letterschetsen van Latin lettertypen en een FontLab ontwerp maken. Nu we de Latin lettertypes aardig in de vingers hebben qua vormen, schakelen we over op non-latin lettertypes. Zo kregen we vandaag onze eerste opdracht; schets het Griekse woord "adhesion". Het Engelse woord "adhesion" wordt geschetst omdat hierin alle lettervorm-variaties in voorkomen; als je deze onder de knie hebt kan je de rest van je alfabet maken. Het woord woord "ηρεμία" is de Griekse versie van "adhesion".
Daarnaast kregen we Griekse schrijf-opdrachten. Erg interessant om te doen! Het is alsof je weer terug in bij af bent en basisschool opdrachten moet doen.

Afgelopen maandag ging de presentatie van Michael Twyman over 'unfinished books'. Dit zijn boeken die als proefdruk (vroeger) werden gedrukt voor de correctie ronde. Hierna kon er akkoord gegeven worden en werd het boek officieel gedrukt. Deze collecties worden door Twyman zelf verzameld, met de 'unfinished books' is hij al 40 jaar bezig!
Ook presenteerde hij de Franse boekenverzameling Journal uit 1835, waarvan telkens 48 pagina's per week werden gepubliceerd. Uiteindelijk bestond één boek uit 10 kleine boekjes, waarna de klant deze boekjes liet binden bij de boekbinderij. Wat deze boeken interessant maakt, is dat het verhaal werd afgebroken aan het einde van de 48ste pagina, zelfs als de tekst eindigde midden in een woord. Het verhaal vervolgde zich de week erna, midden in de afbreking van het vorige boekje. Ongelofelijk!
